Carlin absolutely was a philosopher, he studied the human condition and mocked it relentlessly. He took our self of self importance as a species, and aimed it at us like a weapon and told us to change.

Fall Out Boy has an "updated" version of this very song of the present day.

I got to see him Live at the Circle Star Theater in San Mateo back in the late 70s, my stomach muscles are still sore from laughing.

I was lucky enough to see Carlin perform 2 times. The man was a genius. How he was able to remember his lines I will never know.

Don't freak out. They weren't predicting any futures. IMO and in my experiences they're telling you bad stuff happens and will keep on happening. There is always a chance that something worse can happen. So live YOUR life. But try to be mentally ready for the bad things that can happen in life. We have a saying in the Army to Adapt and Overcome. I'm not trying to bring you down, but don't forget that death is a part of your life and those that pass want you to be happy.

The fact that George had to fight in front of the Supreme Court to get this played on radio AND to allow it to be put on future albums speaks volumes for how much he believed in the freedom of speech being absolutely VITAL to ensure his comedy as well as comedy in the future. And yet, decades late we STILL can't get away with saying these words on TV... OR using updated media like UA-cam. And yet, the whole concept is about having the FREEDOM TO SAY THEM!

Don't know if anyone mentioned it but this is from 1972. George's TV standup career started in 1965. He was on TV a lot throughout his career but he never stopped doing live shows. He never winged it. No crowd work. Every word, motion, gesture and nuance were memorized. He worked the material at smaller venues, made notes during the performance, and would ultimately record a special when it was perfect. His last HBO special, "It's bad for ya" was in 2008. He died later that year.

I first heard this routine when I purchased an LP called Class Clown in 1972. I was seventeen, living at home, and had to listen with my headphones as mom would have taken a rolling pin to the record and then to me if she heard it. I saw him in person later that year. To me it's a song about him seeing that the sun is setting on his life and he's lived a life full of pain, addiction and regret but at the end he found redemption and is now he 's making making peace with God before he takes him.

A few friends and I saw Jethro Tull back in the 70's. Because we could only afford cheap tickets we were seated directly behind the band. At first a little disappointed we quickly discovered this was a great spot.
